Should I choose a traditional or hybrid course?

We strongly believe that hybrid courses are the future of wilderness medical education and offer a superior educational experience. That said, the choice is ultimately yours. Some people choose traditional courses because that’s what they know and are comfortable with, or love immersive, residential experiences. Others choose hybrid courses because they can’t afford to be away from their work or family for so long. Whichever option you choose, we’re certain that you’re going to have a great experience and come away with a wealth of wilderness medical knowledge to support your future endeavours.

Hybrid Courses

Our hybrid learning options deliver the best of all worlds. Uncompromised academic integrity, the flexibility to study from a place and at a time convenient to you, and the ability to self-regulate your pace. Go back and rewatch lectures to cement your understanding, watch familiar material at double time, and focus on materials that are important and relevant to your educational journey.

Our hybrid courses aren’t just self study or eLearning. We haven’t just moved our classroom courses onto zoom or into recorded lectures.

Our hybrid courses are designed from the ground up, utilising the latest relevant technologies, and adhering to modern didactic best practices.

How Hybrid Courses Work

Hybrid courses are broken into two distinct components, online learning and the skills workshop. In order to receive certification, you must satisfactorily complete both programs. When you book your hybrid course, you will receive access to our online learning platform and details of the other tools and facilities available to you throughout your course of study.

You can then work through the online course at your own pace. In addition to the eLearning tools, you can drop into our Zoom “office hours” to chat with your instructor and meet some fellow students. or book into one of our virtual workshops.

Once you’ve finished all the activities and assessments, you can book yourself onto a skills workshop, where you’ll have a chance to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills and knowledge that you acquired.

1) Online Learning

The online learning component of our hybrid courses require a high degree of self motivation and initiative. That said, you’re not alone. You’ll be able to be in touch with your instructor through both live zoom calls, online forums and instant messaging.

The online component includes video lectures, skills demonstrations, interactive videos, decision making activities, case studies, discussion forums, written assessments and more.

2) Skills Workshop

What Others Say About Our Hybrid WAFA

'This online WAFA course was a fantastic response the difficulties that currently exist with international travel. I have taken multiple WMA courses and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to sit through the lectures and tutorials in my own time, rather than in a classroom setting. It was like watching 'the best of' each lecture series, as a lot of thought seems to have gone into getting each session spot-on. The practical sessions were great in-country: all students came together in a large room with a video link to the instructors, and practical break-out sessions were easy to do with mobile phone technology allowing the instructors to walk around and observe each scenario taking place outdoors. Even our final major scenario on a beach while wearing face masks was still easy to interact with the instructors in real-time. I'm really impressed with the expertise of the WMA team and a particular shout-out to the lead instructor Damien on putting this together. After six consecutive WMA certificates and recertifications I'm a lifelong supporter of WMA and this blended course has reinforced this for me. Please keep this blended course option open for future years. It's a game changer for us in the international community.'
