Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Make your space safer for your friends, colleagues or loved ones with an AED.

AEDs are simple and safe to use, and are designed to be used by anyone, without the need for training. AEDs  can be used in homes, schools, offices, sports facilities, shopping centees, public buildings, in fact, pretty much anywhere. If you or a loved one have had severe heart disease, you’re at significantly greater risk of sudden cardiac arrest and might want to consider having an AED nearby.

When is an AED needed?

Heart disease and the ensuing complications are amongst the leading causes of death globally.

Certain forms of cardiac arrest are significantly less likely to be resolved with CPR alone. In addition to the total absense of electrical activity, cardiac arrest can also be a disruption in the heart’s electrical activity resulting in a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a fast and uncoordinated heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation).

When this happens, your brain and other vital organs don’t get the blood and oxygen they need, and start to die within approximately 4 minutes if oxygenation and perfusion are not restored. The sooner your heart’s normal rhythm is restored, the greater the chance that you won’t have permanent damage to your brain and other organs.

In these presence of these irregular heart rhythms, your heart doesn’t pump effectively and may even stop. If an an AED is available and can be attached to the patient, when it detects ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, it will issue a shock to the heart, causing it to stop, allowing it to restart in a regular, organised rhythm.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after cardiac arrest can keep blood flowing to your heart and brain for a time. But often only defibrillation can restore the heart’s normal rhythm. Together these treatments can significantly improve your chances of survival.
